Whether it is a small office or large organization, the LPC is often asked to provide supervision for associate level staff. The needs of the organization are not always in alignment with the needs for good supervision. The workshop will examine these conflicts, and ways to manage them professionally and ethically. The workshop will use break-outs and group discussion to explore the conflicts and talk about ways to manage them.  Good practice of supervision is possible while meeting the needs of the business.

The first part of the workshop will be lecture and discussion around supervision: Purpose of Supervision, providing supervision, ethics of supervision, including reference to the Ethics codes for supervision, and the Law in Georgia, and the responsibilities of supervisor for supervisee and their clients. The second part will discuss the needs of organizations, and what sorts of demands placed on therapists to provide supervision. In the third part, we will read discuss various scenarios that they will bring back to the large group to present.

1. Improved understanding of the ethical pitfalls practicing supervision within an organization

2. Improved understanding of responsibilities of supervisor and supervisor ethics

3. Improved ethical decision making and maintaining professionalism when conflicts arise when providing supervision within an organization.

The TIP 52 covers the clinical supervision and professional development of the substance abuse counselor. However, it offers valuable insight for the practice of supervision for general mental health. This workshop adapts the TIP 52 to cover general mental health.

The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSTAT) within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) creates best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance abuse disorders, based on clinical, research and administrative experts from around the country. Each Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) offers valuable treatment information.

This training will follow the TIP 52, with the first part covering principles of supervision and supervision techniques. The second part of the training will discuss the “how to” of supervision, including building ongoing supervision into an organizational practice. Participants will receive a free copy of the TIP 52 as part of the training.

Goals:

1. Greater understanding of methods and approaches to supervision as show in the TIP

2. Ability to distinguish and navigate between clinical supervision and administrative management

3. Improved ability to assess supervisee progress and development

Supervision is a challenging endeavor that parallels therapy. Just as knowing your models of personality and therapy are important for working with clients, it is important to know your model of supervision. As with therapy, working within a framework allows the supervisor to work with purpose and direction. While the supervisor might use tools form more than one box, it is important to know what blueprint you are working from.

The workshop will review what supervision is (and is not) and then explore the various styles and models of clinical supervision. Through instruction and group discussion around each type of model, we will look at strengths and weaknesses of each approach We will look at Therapy Based, Developmental, and Integrated models. Participants will leave with a broad understanding of the various approaches and a better feel for their model of choice, and what model they wish to seek further study.

One of the most critical tasks of the supervisor is to help develop the ethical decision making of the supervisee. This can also be one of the most challenging areas for the supervisor. Most of us believe we are ethical in our thoughts and actions, and building a consistent ethical process takes both humility and persistence. These require personal changes that are far more difficult for the supervisee to learn than a new therapeutic technique. 

This workshop will look at ethical decision making models, ethics codes, and review situations that pose ethical questions. We will discuss ethical thinking develops and ways to approach ethics in the supervision setting. We will also discuss the ethics of supervision and how modeling effects the development of the therapist.

Role playing is a powerful tool in therapy used by practitioners of various orientations. It is also a useful tool in supervision not only to help the supervisee work on a problem, but to model the technique. Yet, as therapists, we often shy away from using this tool in supervision. If you are one of the reluctant, then this workshop is designed to make you comfortable with using role-play during supervision. If you are confident user of role-play in supervision, then the workshop will help you improve your skills.

The workshop will use some training on information at the beginning. We will review use of role play in individual and group settings and how to help the supervisee practice role play. Then we will practice using Role Play scenarios ourselves. We will give everyone a chance to practice their skills and play the part of a supervisee and supervisor. It will be a fun time where we learn from each other, which is the core spirit of supervision.
